Chick Corea
Return To Forever
Released in 1972, Return To Forever marks a pivotal moment in the career of pianist and composer Chick Corea. The album introduced the musical direction that would soon evolve into the influential fusion group Return to Forever, blending jazz improvisation with Brazilian and Latin musical influences.
Recorded with an exceptional lineup including Flora Purim on vocals, Airto Moreira on percussion, Stanley Clarke on bass, and Joe Farrell, the album creates a unique atmosphere combining spiritual jazz, Latin rhythms, and early fusion textures.
Unlike the more electric and energetic sound the band would later develop, this record has a lighter, more atmospheric character, driven by Corea’s electric piano and delicate arrangements. Tracks like “Crystal Silence” and “La Fiesta” highlight the group’s melodic sensitivity and rhythmic sophistication.
The Japanese pressing on Polydor from the Polydor Jazz Series is particularly appreciated for its clean, detailed sound reproduction, allowing the subtle interplay between instruments and the airy production to shine.
Today, Return To Forever remains a landmark recording in early jazz fusion, capturing the moment when Chick Corea began exploring the blend of jazz improvisation, Latin music, and modern electric instrumentation that would define much of the genre in the 1970s. 🎹🎺
